CWA Memphis Championship Wrestling 3/22/1980

Taped 3/22/1980 at the WMC Studios in Memphis, Tennessee.

Lance Russell and Dave Brown on commentary. Lance Russell mentions that Ali Hassan and Paul Ellering are new AWA Southern Tag Team Champions.

Ali Hassan & Paul “The King” Ellering (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs. Steve Regal & Bobby Lyons

Paul Ellering shows off his AWA Southern Tag Team title belt as he poses while wearing it around his waist. Ali Hassan and Steve Regal start the match. Lock-up with Hassan backing Regal into the ropes. Hassan tries to strike Regal but misses and Regal catches him with a right! Hassan gets him in a side headlock and tags in Ellering.

Ellering misses a forearm across the corner tunrbuckle and Regal armdrags him and gets him in a side headlock and tags in Bobby Lyons. Lyons with a pair of armdrags on Ellering after Paul mocked him. The heels complain about Lyons pulling his hair. Wristlock by Lyons and he tags in Regal who lands an elbow across Ellering’s arm and takes him down with an armbar. Hassan rushes in trying to stop Regal but Lyons gets in.

Powerslam by Ellering on Regal and he goes for a pin but only gets a two. Hassan tags back in but Regal catches him with a forearm and into a side headlock. Regal knocks Hassan down off the ropes and follows with a dropkick and into a side headlock again. Hassan rolls up Regal for a two-count but Regal rolls back with the headlock. He does it a few times on Regal with no success. Hassan counters with a headscissors on Regal. He breaks out and gets Hassan in a headlock again!

Hassan gets back up and punches Regal and tags in Ellering. Ellering with a knee lift on Regal. He slams Regal and misses an elbow. Regal tags in Lyons. Ellering is able to tag in Hassan and they double-team Lyons for a bit. Hassan catches Lyons with a knee to the mid-section. Ellering gets in another shot before getting out of the ring. Lyons tries to fight back but Hassan lands a legdrop on him for a near fall.

Lyons is able to tag in Regal. Regal takes down Hassan but he’s near the ropes and Ellering tags in. Double forearm by Ellering at Regal. He whips Regal into the ropes but Regal makes a comeback and gets a near fall on Ellering. Paul slams him into the corner and tags in Hassan. Hassan sends Regal into his boot a couple of times. Regal reverses a shot into the turnbuckle by Hassan and whips him into the ropes and backdrops Hassan. He goes for the pin but Ellering breaks it up.

All four men briefly in the ring. Regal tags in Lyons. Lyons goes to work on Hassan with some hard shots but Hassan catches him by surprise and sends him into Ellering’s elbow. Paul tags back in and he knocks Lyons down and gets one-count. Lyons gets in a few forearms at Ellering. They both start to slug it out until Ellering gets him with a knee lift near the corner. Regal tags in and he dropkicks both.

Regal tags Lyons back in and Lyons misses a chop. Ellering rolls up Lyons but can’t keep him in the hold. He slams Lyons a couple of times. Follows with an atomic knee drop and Ellering covers him for the pin.

WINNERS: Ali Hassan & Paul Ellering

Jimmy Hart yells out that they are the “People’s Champions”.

Promo for the Louisville Gardens upcoming show with Bill Dundee talking about his Coal Miner’s Glove match against Sonny King. Ken Lucas talks about a six-man tag match. Jimmy Valiant also talks about the six-man tags and says he loves six-women tags!

“Handsome” Jimmy Valiant & Ken Lucas vs. Dennis Upton & David Oswald

Jimmy Valiant joins the announcers and gives a promo and introduces his partner “Kenneth Lucas”! Ken Lucas and David Oswald start the match and Lucas takes down Oswald. He slams him and whips him into the ropes and punches him. Knee lift by Lucas and a side headlock takedown. Oswald reverses with a headscissors which upset Lucas and he beats on Oswald. Valiant tags in and punches Oswald. He hiptosses Oswald into his corner to tag in Upton.

Valiant continues to beat on Upton and backdrops him really hard. He slams Upton and tags in Lucas. Lucas with some punches on Upton and he tags in Valiant. Valiant heads over and punches Oswald. He then slams Upton and tags in Lucas who catches Upton with an elbow. Knee drops across Upton’s jaw and he covers him for the pin.

WINNERS: Jimmy Valiant & Ken Lucas

Jimmy Valiant tosses Upton out of the ring after the match. He yells that it’s his birthday and again repeats “Kenneth Lucas”.

They show highlights of Ali Hassan and Paul Ellering beating Billy Robinson and Ken Lucas for the AWA Southern Tag Team titles at the Louisville Gardens.

Buddy Wayne vs. Rick Morton

Buddy Wayne with a hair pull takes Rick Morton down to the mat but Morton quickly reverses it into a hammerlock on Wayne. Morton flips Wayne off the ropes and Buddy holds onto his back. Wayne grabs Morton by the left arm and takes him down. He goes for a headscissors on Morton. Single leg takedown by Wayne. Morton escapes and gets him in a front facelock. Some good counter wrestling leads to Wayne getting to the ropes.

Morton with a side headlock on Wayne. He takes him down to the mat. Wayne tries to roll Morton’s shoulders onto the mat for a pin attempt but can’t keep Morton on the mat. Buddy has trouble trying to escape the headlock. He tosses Morton into the corner. Wayne beats on Morton and whips him into the ropes and catches him with a knee to the mid-section. He whips him again but Morton leapfrogs over him and then catches Wayne with a Thesz Press for the pin!

WINNER: Rick Morton

“Dr. D” David Schultz, Dennis Condrey & Sonny King vs. Rick Gibson, Robert Gibson & “Superstar” Bill Dundee

Dennis Condrey and Bill Dundee start the match. He misses an elbow in the corner. Dundee gets Condrey in a wristlock but Condrey knocks him down. Referee warns Condrey. Dundee with a side headlock and tags in Robert Gibson. Dundee gets in a parting shot on Condrey. Robert with a side headlock on Condrey. Conredy whips Robert into the ropes but he gets knocked down. Condrey tags in Schultz.

Dr. D gets Robert in a waistlock but it gets reversed and Robert gets a near fall on him. Robert tags in Rick and he gets Schultz in a side headlock. Some quick action leads to Schultz getting Rick with a backdrop. He tags in Sonny King who gets in and beats on Rick. Reverse chinlock on Rick who tries to fight his way out of it. He bridges out but Sonny tries to bend him over his knee. Dundee argues with the referee.

Rick Gibson bridges out of it but Condrey pulls him back down by the hair. King keeps him in the chinlock. The heels beat on Rick while King tries to get Robert and Dundee to distract the referee. Condrey now in and he gets Rick in the chinlock. Rick elbows his way out of the hold. Shoulder blocks by Rick and he tags in Dundee.

Dundee hits Dr. D with a big elbow. Schultz tags in King. Dundee charges at King and the two exchange some punches until King headbutts Dundee and knocks him down. King tags in Condrey and he drops a knee across Dundee. He gets a few near falls on Dundee and then tags in Schultz. Suplex by Dr. D! He tags in King again and he gets in some fists at Dundee. He kicks at Dundee and then stomps on him. He starts to choke Dundee and the referee warns him.

Again they fire away at each other. Dundee whips King into the ropes and knocks him down with an elbow. Dr. D tags in and Dundee keeps the attack going before tagging in Rick Gibson who dropkicks Schultz! They both knock each other down off the ropes. Dr. D is able to tag in Condrey. Dennis whips Rick into the ropes and backdrops him. King tags in and he punches Rick Gibson. Rick fights back but can’t make the tag.

Sonny King snapmares Rick and starts to twist his head. Fans start to chant for Rick Gibson. Referee breaks it up. King goes after Dundee. Condrey and Robert Gibson go at it. Robert goes for a sunset flip for the pin on Condrey for the surprise pin!

WINNERS: Bill Dundee, Rick Gibson & Robert Gibson

Jimmy Hart, Ali Hassan and Paul Ellering promo for the upcoming Louisville Gardens show. Hart is upset about having to wrestle in the match and says he is a manager. He vows that they’ll be seeing a Fighting Jimmy Hart. He says it is Paul Ellering’s birthday. Paul Ellering calls their opponents the Three Little Pigs.

SHOW THOUGHTS: Okay episode. Main event was good. Fast-paced action with Dundee and the Gibsons. Condrey, Schultz and King are a really good heel trio. Opening tag match was solid as well with Steve Regal working a fast-paced match against Ellering and Hassan. Two other matches were short. Jimmy Valiant always looks like he’s having fun.
