SMW TV #31 (8/10/1992)

Taped 8/10/1992 at Avery County High School in Newland, North Carolina. Aired on 8/29/1992.

Bob Caudle & Dutch Mantell on commentary. Dutch mentions that on “Down & Dirty” they’ll air the tag team title contract signing between The Fantastics & The Heavenly Bodies.

The Fantastics (Bobby & Jackie Fulton) vs. Paul Lee & Mike Sampson

Dutch Mantell mentions how it’s a sad day in professional wrestling when the Fantastics are the tag team champions! LOL! Paul Lee gets a few shoulder tackles in the corner but Bobby Fulton reverses and whips him over the ropes and then slingshots him back into the ring. Double headscissors by Bobby and Jackie pushes Bobby to flip Paul Lee and Mike Sampson. Monkey flip by Jackie sends Paul Lee across the ring. Double-team work by The Fantastics.

Bob Caudle mentions that the Fantastics while in Japan learned a new hold. Mantell hasn’t seen the hold. Jackie leapfrogs over Paul Lee and Bobby Fulton gets Lee in a sleeperhold which apparently is the hold they learned in Japan. Mantell said they learned it from an “Oriental Master”. Sampson tries to make the save for his partner but Jackie dropkicks him out of the ring. Bobby wins the match with the sleeper.

WINNERS: The Fantastics

They re-air the closing moments of last week’s match between Paul Orndorff and Ronnie Garvin. Garvin joins Caudle for an interview. Ronnie Garvin said he was mostly just a “weekend warrior” because he was already getting out of wrestling when SMW called and asked if he would team with Brian Lee. He only planned on wrestling that one night but Paul Orndorff has turned this into a big issue. Garvin said he’s wrestled the best including Andre The Giant and he is upset that Orndorff wants to cripple him with the piledriver. He’s used the piledriver before Orndorff ever started using it.

Paul Orndorff runs out and interrupts Garvin and tells him they could have a match now. Garvin said this is not the right time for that match. Orndorff heads to the ring and waves over to Garvin. Garvin refuses to chase him.

They air highlights from Brian Lee getting attacked by a mystery person the past few weeks during and after his matches. Brian Lee and SMW Commissioner Bob Armstrong join Bob Caudle and Armstrong tells Lee that he’s doing his best to find out who that mystery man is and who sent him. Armstrong also says he’s removing all the wanted signs that he’s seen in various places with the $10,000 bounty on Brian Lee.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Express promo for upcoming Beckley show.

Killer Kyle (w/ Jim Cornette) vs. Tommy Angel

Bob Caudle mentions that Cornette told them that Killer Kyle was going to show them a new hold that he’s learned. Kyle headbutts and chokes Tommy Angel. Angel leapfrogs over Kyle and tries to knock him down with no luck. Kyle kicks Angel and then gets him in a side slam. Caudle asks Mantell who he thinks is paying the mystery man to attack Brian Lee, Mantell tells him that he thinks its Tim Horner because you can’t trust people from East Tennessee. Kyle refuses to pin Angel after the side slam. Kyle gorilla presses Angel and slams him down. He lands a chop at Angel’s throat and again refuses to pin him.

Killer Kyle rakes Angel’s eyes. He gets Angel with a backbreaker and covers him for the pin but lifts him back up again. Kyle with a shoulder tackle at Angel and then whips him across the ropes but Angel moves. Angel tries to take Kyle down again with no luck. Kyle catches Angel with a bear hug and then slams him down. Killer Kyle gets Angel with a reverse bearhug and gets the win.

Kyle puts Angel back in the reverse bearhug again and Dixie Dynamite comes out with a chair. He hits Kyle a few times but Kyle doesn’t feel anything and keeps staring at Dynamite! Cornette gets him out of the ring.

WINNER: Killer Kyle

The Dirty White Boy & Mr. Ron Wright join Bob Caudle for an interview. Mr. Wright says they wrote everyone’s name and will put them all in a hat to draw the name of who he’ll defend the title against on the show. He picks out the paper with the name “Nitro” Danny Davis.

“Down & Dirty” with Dutch Mantell up next featuring the SMW Tag Team title contract signing between The Heavenly Bodies and The Fantastics. Dutch mentions that Jim Cornette has put up $20,000 to get this match to happen. Bobby Fulton calls the Heavenly Bodies “low-life scums” and says $20,000 is a lot of money and they will put the titles up for that amount. SMW Commissioner Bob Armstrong says he will not take a check from Jim Cornette or his mama and will only agree to make this match happen if they bring the money in cash. Cornette is upset that they brought up his mother. He also wants there to be a No-Disqualification clause in the match. Bobby Fulton whispers something to Armstrong which upsets Mantell, Cornette and the Bodies. SMW Commissioner Bob Armstrong says that the SMW Tag Team title match will be No DQ, no time-limit, will be on next week’s TV show, and Cornette can’t bring along his tennis racket. This upsets Cornette and the Bodies. Both teams sign the contract.

The Dirty White Boy © vs. Danny Davis for the SMW Heavyweight Title

Danny Davis chases around The Dirty White Boy who gets to the ropes. Davis grabs hold of DWB’s hair. He gets hold of DWB with a headscissors but Dirty White Boy reaches the ropes. The Dirty White Boy gets in a few punches at Davis and whips him across the corner. Davis reverses and uses his speed to take down DWB, who heads to the outside to talk to Mr. Ron Wright.

He returns to the ring. Tim Horner joins the announcer’s desk and joins Mantell who suddenly is really nice to Horner. Test of strength battle between the two. Davis monkey flips DWB and then dropkicks him. He whips DWB across the ropes but DWB holds the ropes and kicks at Davis. Small package by Davis gets him a near fall. Punches from Davis followed by a neckbreaker on DWB. More punches from Davis. Referee Mark Curtis stops Davis from attacking DWB in the corner. Mr. Ron Wright hands The Dirty White Boy some brass knuckles. Davis heads over and The Dirty White Boy punches him and covers Davis for the pin.

Tim Horner heads to the ring to challenge The Dirty White Boy and checks on Davis. Mantell changes his tune on Horner and trashes him again.

WINNER: The Dirty White Boy

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express (Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson) vs. The Stud Stable (Robert Fuller & Jimmy Golden)

The Stud Stable attack The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express as they enter the ring. Wild brawl between both tag teams. Morton and Gibson send the Stud Stable to the outside. Jimmy Golden asks for a timeout. Fuller complains about punches thrown by the Rock ‘n’ Roll Express. Caudle rips on Mantell for being so nice to Horner after talking so negatively about him throughout the show. Gibson hiptossses both Golden and Fuller. Morton comes in and they toss the Stud Stable into a corner at each other.

Robert tags in Ricky who dropkicks Golden. Each of them take turns pinning Golden and then both pile on top of Golden for a pin. Golden whips Morton into his corner and Fuller gets him with a knee to the back. Fuller comes into the ring and suplexes Morton. Fuller tags in Golden and Golden punches Gibson off the apron. Knee lift from Golden on Morton. Near fall but they are on the ropes. Stud Stable double team Morton. Fuller tosses Morton over the top rope! Golden tosses him back into the ring. Fuller gets Morton in a bear hug and then slams him down.

Golden back in and continues to beat on Morton but Ricky makes a comeback with a big kick to Golden’s head. Both tag their partners and Gibson beats on The Stud Stable. All four men in the ring. Golden is tied to the ropes. Referee gets knocked down a few times and calls for the bell to ring. All four men continue to brawl in and out of the ring. They announce that both teams have been disqualified.

Jim Cornette & The Stud Stable promos for Beckley show.

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express join Bob Caudle for a post-match interview. They declare war against The Stud Stable.

SHOW THOUGHTS: Excellent show! One thing SMW had was that there was always a continuation in their storylines and when one would end, they’d have a new one to start. This show had the ongoing feud between The Fantastics and The Heavenly Bodies with both teams agreeing to a tag title match for next week with the added stip of Cornette putting up $20,000 and then the match turning into a No DQ, no time limit match. Plus the added stip of Cornette not being allowed to bring his tennis racket with him. Then you have the continued mystery of who put a bounty on Brian Lee and who the mystery man who keeps attacking him is. Just going thru the storylines and rivalries you have a pretty good list of stuff to keep up with on SMW at this time:

– The Dirty White Boy refusing to defend the title against Tim Horner
– The Heavenly Bodies (w/ Jim Cornette) vs. The Fantastics
– Ron Garvin vs. Paul Orndorff
– The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express vs. The Stud Stable
– The bounty and the mystery person attacking Brian Lee
– Dixie Dynamite vs. Killer Kyle

That’s six storylines going on and what I like is after one ends, they have another to add without skipping a beat or spending a long time setting it up. I enjoyed the Dirty White Boy’s title defense and the main event tag match were good. I was a little disappointed that the new move that The Fantastics learned while in Japan was a sleeperhold. It was somewhat amusing that was the move they learned but still was hoping for something slightly different. Excellent show.
